Interview with Amity Roach

Recently Jay, of Red Road Design and Ziggy and Friends, interviewed Amity Roach, Etsy's UK Community Manager, for the McEtsy blog and here is the result. Thank you to Jay for arranging this addition to our blog and a big thank you to Amity for taking the time to share your thoughts with us.

Describe yourself in five words and how would your friends describe you (in five)!!
1 - A little weird but nice. 2 - You'd hafta ask my friends!

How did Etsy come about?
Six years ago a woodworker, painter and artist, Rob Kalin, was looking for a place to sell his work online. When he realised that there were few good options for him and his creative friends, Etsy was born. It was created by artists for artists, and I think you can feel that.

What do you love most about being with Etsy and is there a down side?
Etsy has an amazing vibe and I feel very fortunate to be a part of it. The exciting thing is that we're very passionate about helping people do what they love. The wider ramifications of that have the potential to change to local, and global, economy. In other words, we want to support people in changing their lives on a personal level, which, in turn, has the potential to empower communities, countries, and perhaps even the world.
The only downside is that I don't always have time to do everything I want to! My mental to-do list is a long one.

In your portfolio what are you most happy with?
My Etsy shop actually worked as a portfolio in itself - it got me several jobs in the fashion industry before I decided to focus on my business full-time. From starting on Etsy as a photographer trying to sell prints, all the way to becoming one of the top UK sellers with my line of recycled silver jewellery, I'm really proud of the way it took off. I feel like that in itself was the really big achievement, more so than any one particular design.

Of course a job at Etsy was an offer I couldn't refuse and the timing was great. I needed a break from jewellery (my shop is currently on hiatus) and was ready to take on other adventures. I'm really happy with many of the articles in the UK Edition of the blog. There are some journalistic pieces which I think have been helpful to the community and some shopping-focused trends articles which I know have gotten sellers some fantastic attention from outside of Etsy as well.

I'm feeling good about the "Beginner Seller Boot Camp" workshops I've created. They're not perfect yet, but it's super rewarding when newbies tell me how beneficial they are. I also love that I get to teach myself new making skills so that I can lead craft nights.

What’s your ideal working day?
At the moment, my ideal working day gives me some time to get crafty in the evenings! It's all about getting a balance for me, I find time for cooking and exercise - which are both really important to me - pretty much every day. But occasionally I'll find myself curating collections or writing an article in the wee hours. Working for Etsy can be incredibly addictive in a very positive way, and sometimes I feel like shouting "BINGO!" when I know I've nailed a particular piece of work.

Who influences you creatively?
Hands down, the Etsy community first. Corny and predictable but so true. Inspiration comes from many other places and people too, but right now I'm feeling very inspired by architecture and graffiti artists.

I don't think I've ever had a plan so much as just trusting whatever path feels good to me at any given moment.

Where’s your favourite place to work?
Home, surrounded by nature.

Music on or off when working?
Definitely off when writing, I need the closest thing to silence. When crafting, music rules. I've been slightly obsessed with Everything Everything for a few months.

Any new personal creative adventures on the horizon?
Yes! It has to do with a new found love for embroidery. I'm hoping to do something outrageous and contemporary with it.

Team Captain Interview - Part Two

For the second installment of our introduction to the new McEtsy joint Captains we have an interview with Sally from LifeCovers.

What do you love most about Scotland?

The diversity of such a small country; the seasons, the landscape and most of all it's people.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

I don't usually have a set plan for what I'm going to make when I start each day. I look around my pile of fabrics until something catches my eye. If the beautiful British fabrics I work with don't inspire me then I'll go for a walk into the Lammermuir Hills or down to the beach and then come home with a clear head ready to start sewing.

What prompted you to open your Etsy shop?

Taking a stand at a local craft fair was always a dream for me and I see Etsy as an extension of that. It's a worldwide craft fair that's open 24 hours a day - perfect for night owls.

Which piece in your Etsy shop do you think is most representative of your work or yourself, and why?

Well, that's a good question and I'll try to come up with an answer that's deep and meaningful! Actually, it's more about the fabric than the products I create with them. Harris Tweed has such a history and is woven by individuals in their own homes. I was lucky enough to spend a while on a small Scottish Island in my 30's and it was truly a life changing experience for me. I learnt to enjoy my own company and be at peace. Each time I work with Harris Tweed I feel that same calmness and imaging the weaver at work on his loom.

What new skill would be top of your "to learn" list?

Well, I'm always trying to master new techniques with my sewing machine and only last week attended a 1-day course to learn more from my computerised sewing machine. However, I've always wanted to work with wood and am planning on spending a week next year with a master craftsman making a simple Windsor chair.

And, finally, what is your favourite crafty tip?

Oh dear, that's a tough question. I've discovered lots of little short cuts over the years and techniques that are helpful but really, my best tip would be just to get started. Some of my favourite items have been created because I didn't have the right tools or the right fabrics. I once attended summer school for creating mosaics and since the cost of using the special mosaic glass tiles was prohibitive, we improvised by going to all the local charity shops and buying up the patterned china and then smashing it to pieces. We had such fun and each piece we created was so unique.

Team Captain Interview - Part One

As we have new joint Captains for our team it seems like a fine idea to get to know them better. The following interview is with Jay from RedRoadDesign.

Since this is McEtsy, we'll start with what you love most about Scotland?

I love the variety there is in this country - it may be small be you can do so many things. I love that the nights are long in summer which I didn't realise did not happen in places like Australia where it gets dark quite quickly. It's a small country but I like that too although it can be a bit of a pain when it can get a bit too parochial. The seasons colours are wonderful and we have amazing scenery.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

I get my inspiration from everywhere really. I love taking photographs and travelling - these inspire me. Talking with other creatives, pressing my nose up against a beautifully arranged shop whether it's a deli or a chic boutique. Lovely books and magazines too and visiting art galleries.

What prompted you to open your Etsy shop?

I wanted to get creative again as I'd been struggling to get started so the shop was a challenge and a way to build my confidence again. I tended to use my ideas creatively through my art and design students so was pretty worn out (creatively) by the weekend. I first started using Etsy to buy things - I had a zine project for my students so I would be them here as examples for them.

Which piece in your Etsy shop do you think is most representative of your work or yourself, and why?

I think it's a mixed media piece called 'moon : 3' as it's taken me in a different direction and is much more intuitive than I used to work.

What new skill would be top of your "to learn" list?

Computer software like Illustrator and more of Photoshop - I'm enjoying these just now although they can drive me round the bend too as I'm still learning. And how to improve my blog and produce a web site for myself! Bit of a control freak! LOL

And, finally, what is your favourite crafty tip?

When you paste artwork on to a piece of card, make sure you allow a bit of a border, always paste it first and then trim both the artwork and the card together - much better finish!

The Rabbits Need You

Annette from Dragon House of Yuen is currently involved with two raffles raising money to fund the rescue of rabbits and there is still time to get your tickets.

Here in the UK, Rabbit and Guinea Pig Weflare is one of the groups that works to rescue and permanently rehome as many of these cuddly creatures as possible. Currently they are holding a Christmas fundraiser raffle to help with the costs associated with the work they do and tickets are only £1. In the USA, The Buckeye House Rabbit Society, which is part of a larger national society, also works to rescue and rehome rabbits and to educate the public about rabbit care. Crafting For Cancer

One of our newer McEtsy members, Michelle of Rubarb & Ginger, has made a commitment to help children with cancer by making quilts for individual children plus extra quilts to be sold to raise funds for CLIC Sargent.

Design Challenge

Seaside Creatures

Thank you to Sally for her seaside suggestion. I think this theme might last a few posts, as there are so many different aspects to consider. We'll begin our trip with seaside creatures, both above and below the waves.

Foxen has been doing a great job keeping the beaches clean for all of us to enjoy. If you keep a close look out you might see him next time you take a stroll along the sand.

Recent Events - Gracehounds Hot Dog Show

Several McEtsy members recently attended the annual Hot Dog Show organised by the charity Gracehounds. Although lacking in sunshine the event was a success, raising much needed funds to help find permanent homes for greyhounds and lurchers.

Hi everyone!

I must first of all say sorry as it was my intention to post this yesterday but got utterly side tracked and didnt get my PC all day!

So here we go get your self a cup of tea or a glass of wine and have a read of Katy's featured seller interview!

-Tell us a bit about you?

My name is Katy, and I have a passion for using reclaimed and found items in my crafting. My number one craft is knitting, I love to hand sew, and I've recently been getting into paper crafts - particularly ones which reuse offcuts of paper from other projects, old wallpaper and security envelopes.

I've been working in retail in one way or another since I was a Saturday girl with Sainsbury's at the age of 17. I progressed to store manager at the age of 22, after a stint working in New York with small business start ups in the tech field. I worked for a venture capitalist who is a part owner of one of the world's biggest fashion houses/retailers, so I've had some great opportunities to learn about sales, and running my own business.

My day job now is in healthcare, so my crafting business took off as an outlet for my entrepreneurial energy. I find the repetitive nature of some of my favourite crafts relaxing after a day at work - making stitches on my needles, creasing envelopes, punching embellishments and sewing seams by hand make me smile. The idea of creating something tangible is the perfect antidote to working with draft documents, theoretical concepts and legislation all day.

-How did you get started in your craft?

My nana taught me to knit when I was four, and I was making Sindy clothes by the time I started school! In art classes at school the teachers despaired of trying to make me good at drawing, so I was allowed to make things out of old cardboard boxes, cotton reels and egg boxes, and the 'making new stuff out of old stuff' went on from there.

I can fondly remember the My Little Pony caravan I made one summer at primary school.

-Talk us through a typical day in your your life?

I have a day job, so I leave the house at 9ish and walk the 3 miles to work, if it's not hammering it down. I'm usually home again for 6.30/7o'clock, if I'm not working in Edinburgh or away with work for the night somewhere else in Scotland. I've been to everywhere from Stromness to Peebles with work, and my fiance's family have been known to joke about how a foreigner has seen more of Scotland than they have!

Once I get home, if it's a sunny day I tear around the flat trying to make the most of the light to take photos. Then it's on to the computer to answer convos, emails, edit photos and tend my listings. I'll spend a bit of time on Twitter or updating my blog, take care of Glasgow Craft Mafia market business for an hour or so, then it's onto the couch to cut envelopes, do a bit of knitting, or hand sewing.

I like to watch Channel 4 comedies, listen to radio 4 dramas, and I listen to 6 music when I remember. I used to do a bit of student radio DJing, as well as theodd party or nightclub, and used to be a music journalist, too, so I like to keepmy hand in!

On the weekends I tend to do much the same, except instead of work, I spend time in the day with friends and family, or take part in craft markets, or work on my MSc dissertation.

-Your pics are fab what would your top 5 tips on taking good photots for products be?

1:take advantage of the light when it's a nice day! I live in a ground floor tenement, with a communal back court. I can't really take photos outdoors because it's just not pretty out there, so I have a spot on my living room windowsill that works a treat.

2: Don't take too much notice of other people's advice. What works for them may not work for you.

3: Be creative! You'd get shot down in flames on auction sites for wonky shots, but on Etsy, Folksy, or your own website, you can be as artsy and off the wall as you like.

4: Find a style that works for you, and a way of showing off your products the best you can.

5: Be critical - look at photos of other people's work and try to understand what makes them attractive or unattractive to you. I worked out that my eclectic products needed a fixed style to make my etsy shop look well put together, so I try to take them in the same spot on a similar background. Leave them alone, then come back to them with fresh eyes.

The joy of digital cameras is that you can redo your photos at the drop of a hat, and changing them every now and again is easy.

And an extra one - if you suck, get someone else to do it!

The Glasgow Craft Mafia arranged a photoshoot of our products for publication in The List, and it made my products look amazing - so much better than I could ever have done.

-Tell us a bit about how you run your shop? Listing, relisting, what works for you and what doesnt.

I find that I get spikes in my views when I list new products, and relist when they expire. I don't have a relisting strategy because I didn't feel comfortable building repeat listing fees into my pricing structure. I have an advertising budget and have used that for advertising via CraftCult, which I found to be pretty successful. My blog, twitter, and membership of Glasgow Craft Mafia have been key drivers of traffic to my shop. Writing tutorials, interacting with other bloggers and sites and handing out my business card at craft markets have worked really well, too.

I've made new friends all over the world via my membership of the Etsy team HoardersUnite, and now I'm a part of the revamped McEtsy team, I'm hoping we can work together to raise our profile on Etsy. I've also been lucky enough to be featured in at least two fellow McEtsians' treasuries, for which I'm very grateful!

-Tell us about the craft mafia? What is it!?

It's a collaborative of crafty types working together to raise the profile of craft. The Craft Mafia was started by super crafty types Vickie Howell, Jenny Hart and so on, over in Ausin, TX, and now has chapters all over the US and UK. Glasgow has the first Scottish craft mafia, but we hope that other cities will follow suit soon! The only stipulation for joining is that you have to have a full or part time crafty business, with an internet presence, and live in Glasgow and be prepared to join in. We organise social events, markets, and run a lively forum which is a mine of useful business and craft information. We have representatives from a huge range of crafty enterprises from art, to ceramics, to vintage clothing, to printers, book binders, felt taxidermists, and the likes of me who do a little bit of everything. I've never been one of the in crowd, and I was put off for a long while because I thought that it would be cliquey. I was pleased to be proved wrong on that count, and everyone I have met has been supportive, friendly and open to collaboration, too. It's been a great step for me business wise and socially! Caffeine free diet coke. I'd love to knit a red and white scarf with Paris Hilton's quote 'only fat people drink diet coke' - I might have a degree in French literature but I like me some lowbrow!

-Whats your fav place in Scotland and why?

I have fond memories from my student days in the old town of Edinburgh, and I'll always have a soft spot for the Meadows, jogging around the foot of Arthur's Seat, and my old flat overlooking the Pleasance theatre. In fact, when I graduated and worked with tech start ups and a fashion house in New York, I eventually came back because I missed Edinburgh weather! However, my all-time favourite place in Scotland is New Lanark, and not just due to my obsession with industrial history. It's where my fiance and I had our first date, and where we're getting married later this year.

-Whats the one thing if life you could not live without?

Imagination, in myself, and others. Life would be soooo dull.

-Anything else you would like to add!?

So we welcome Jane from The Dog House, she was sent our first featured seller questions and here are her responses!

-Ok tell us a little about you and what you do?

My name is Jane & I'm 27 years old. I live in the beautiful Midlothian countryside with my partner Martin, cat Angie & retired greyhounds Max & Molly.

Until fairly recently I worked in the medical profession, before leaving to pursue a simpler life of screen printing & dog walking! I make & sell unique hand printed items in my Etsy shop, The Dog House, & am in the process of setting up my own dog walking service, Let The Dogs Out.-How did you get started in your craft?I have always loved making things, & will try my hand at anything from knitting to baking to card making to pottery painting…! I’m one of those people who just didn’t grow out of experimenting with glue & glitter & all manner of other (mostly messy) crafting materials as I got older!

So, when I came across a DIY screen printing tutorial on the internet, it didn’t take long for me to get my hands on some fabric inks, ‘borrow’ some of my boyfriend’s less-loved items of clothing, & get drawn into the exciting world of screen printing.Naturally, the first prints I created were of things around me in my day to day life which were eye-catching, photogenic & a little bit comical: my greyhounds! Observing that my boyfriend was actually rather chuffed with his newly printed wardrobe (& not thinking the results were too bad myself either!), I proceeded to decorate all kinds of items with images of the dogs I live with & love. Running out of things to print on & gathering new ideas for prints like a snowball, I decided to unleash my creativity on the world at large & The Dog House was born!

-What inspires you?

My inspiration comes predominantly from greyhounds, in particular by my own 2 needle-noses, Max & Molly. I think their sleek lines & graceful (& at times not so graceful!) poses make striking prints. After capturing the dogs on camera, I convert the original photographs to monochrome images which I then use to make my prints. I like experimenting with bold colour combinations & captioning in my work.Sadly, every year many greyhounds are abandoned or destroyed. Bred in large numbers for the racing industry, after short or unsuccessful careers they are surplus to the requirements of their trainers. Yet these gentle & sweet-natured dogs make wonderful companion animals & I couldn’t imagine life without my two!

-Talk us through a typical day in your your life?

Usually the dogs will wake us up before the alarm clock goes off! After letting them outside & feeding them, we all bundle into the car & drive into Edinburgh to drop Martin off at work.

Then I meet up with some of the other volunteers from our local greyhound rehoming charity, Gracehounds, & together we walk both our own dogs & those being fostered by the charity. Walking the dogs can take most of the morning, but it's great being out in the open air like that every day!

Once my own dog walking service gets off the ground, I'll be signing over even more of my time to be spent this way! In the afternoon, once the dogs are all tired out, I tend to focus more on The Dog House. Depending on how well stocked my shop is & how many custom orders I have, this time will be split between printing items with screens I have already made, & creating new screens. Making each individual screen can be pretty time consuming & requires some intricate work. However, once a screen is made I can then reuse it over & over again to make prints, so it is worth taking time over making the original. Creating new designs, especially custom ones, is definitely my favourite part of the process!

After taking Max & Molly for another walk & picking up my partner from work, the evening is the time when I usually take photograph my work & do any listing / shop maintenance. I'm very lucky to have a partner who is fantastic with the camera (he sells some of his prints on Etsy (www.redrowstudio.etsy.com)), so he is a great help in getting my pictures right.

When I'm not engrossed in any of the above, you'll find me running, playing fiddle, tinkling on the piano, gardening or baking! Oh, & relaxing on the sofa if I get a spare second & the dogs haven't got there first!

-What would be your top 5 tips for a new seller on etsy?

1. Be original - find your own style rather than emmulating what others have done before you

2. Make sure your photos do your work justice - sooo important

3. Join at least one team - I'm a member of 2 fantastic teams (McEtsy & Handmade4Hounds (www.handmade4hounds.etsy.com) & love the sense of community this gives

4. Blog - but not just about your shop! Try sharing some of your life & letting (potential) customers see your human side too. (My blog is maxandmollydesigns.wordpress.com.)

5. Don't forget most of your customers will find you from outside Etsy - this has big implications for where you focus any promotional efforts

-Do you sell anywhere else other than Etsy?

Etsy is the only online venue I sell from, but I have recently taken part in my first ever craft fair & hope to do more of these in the future.

-Your having a dinner party and you can invite 5 people dead or alive who would you invite and why?

OK, I'm struggling with this question...!

1. Vincent Van Gough - so I could ask him why...

2. Bob Dylan - to provide the music

3. David Attenborough - for the conversation (That man could talk about nature all day & I'd listen!)

4. Caesar Millan - to make sure the dogs were on their best behaviour!

5. My boyfriend - so he could cook!

-Whats your fav food?

It's got to be chocolate - we can't keep any in the house or I'll end up eating it!

-Tea or Coffee?

Tea. A good cup of tea helps solve so many problems!

-Anything else you would like to add!?

I'd like to say thank you for the encouraging comments so far :) You should all be getting my mail today. If you haven't then that means you are not on the mailing list so send me your addresses if you want to be included. Don't worry, I don't spam your mailboxes :)

We have over 70 members now so I really think we have the makings of a great community !

As I said at the start of McEtsy, I don't want this to be a high pressure team where you have spend all your time promoting the team, I see it as becoming a friendly warm place where we can find help, support, information, advice or just a good blether, while at the same raising our Scottish profile where we can :)

Ahh the Season of merriment, mirth and mayhem is almost upon us all ! I picture us all beavering away completing those last minute orders, satisfying the demands of those last minute customers, while with the other hand we are compiling our lists of to do's and trying not to pull out too much hair. The big day is bearing down on us with the unstoppable inertia of a runaway express train, and if one more checkout girl at the supermarket says to me " are you all ready for Christmas?" I swear I shall I commit an offence with a Christmas cracker ! Ho Ho Ho !

'Tis the Season ...

I'll spare you all the torture of my bathroom soprano :) suffice it to say that unless you have been living in a cave as a hermit this last year or so you will all be fully aware that the season of cheer and goodwill is about to descend on us, somewhat similar to an avalanche :) I have no doubt that a lot of us are getting very busy as the spectre, er I mean spectacle of Christmas ( or Yule depending on your leanings) approaches. With that in mind I will not be opening a chatroom until after the horrors, I mean festivities, have passed and we all breathe a sigh of relief :)

Getting to know each other.

I would like to pick up the tempo a little now that our team is growing even more, it may be slow but we are getting new members weekly if not daily at times :) I don't suppose we shall ever be a HUGE team, after all Scotland isn't the largest area on the map ! However, I believe that Scotland is a rich and fertile resource for 'craftiness' :) Look how much talent there is here already ! and we have only just begun really !

So, I would like to try to establish a regular weekly chatroom where we can all meet up to chew the fat, exchange ideas, seek and give help and advice, tell jokes, pat each other on the back, laugh together, cry together, support each other and anything else that comes up.

Previous polls seemed to point at Mondays being a good day for this but the trial nights did not prove very successful so I will try again now that our numbers have swelled even more :)

Poll Results

As you can probably see, the poll on Chatroom days of the week seems fairly close, Mondays are slightly ahead but its only a few votes between the days. So for one week only - 15th to 19th September I will open a chatroom each weekday night at 8pm UK time. Hopefully this will enable all of us to attend at least one chatroom and get to meet each other to a greater or lesser degree :) It may then become clearer which day of the week works best for the majority of us.

The chatroom will be titled McEtsy Team and the password will be cake, ( covetables, please make sure you bring plenty supplies! )

Please let everyone else you know in McEtsy that the chats will be open during this time, as not everyone will have read the blog :)

I'd like to apologise for an apparent lack of action here on the McEtsy blog for the past couple of weeks. Some of you may already know that our Mochadesigns is preparing to start at University shortly and in consequence she got a lot more busy than she had expected :)

Some of our new members have been waiting a bit longer than hoped to be accepted but I'm getting this all back on track now. You should all be notifed sometime today ! And thankyou for your patience :)

I'd like to ask you all to participate in a couple of polls I am going to run about a chatroom at etsy. I think it would be nice for us all to meet at least once and say hi to each other. I had forseen this chatroom meeting as an opportunity for us to offer ideas and thoughts as well, not just as a social gathering. Myself and Littleshopofdelights have been discussing the idea of a newsletter lately which would be emailed every few weeks to all members of the McEtsy clan. The newsletter would include details of competitions, meetings, featured members, ways to advertise, new members etc. It would also include all important information and upcomming events. We both feel this would be a great way to interact with all the members and we would appreciate if you could let us know your most frequently used email address to send a copy of the newsletter to. Almost a Week

It's almost been a week now and McEtsy is still going strong. We have had interest and have accepted new members already which is fantastic! Thank you to everyone for promoting McEtsy and I hope youre enjoying being a member of the 'clan'.

Starting Up

Tonight Littleshopofdelights & myself (mochadesigns) have been discussing our Scottish McEtsy team application we now have 13 members including ourselves so we'd like to say thank you to all those wonderful people who are helping make this happen.
